INTRO — THIS WAS NEVER JUST A WAR

On one side:
Persia — the largest empire the world had ever seen.
On the other side:
Greece — a bunch of city-states that couldn’t agree on lunch, let alone politics.

Persia had:

  • roads

  • bureaucracy

  • money

  • elite troops

  • a king who thought very highly of himself

Greece had:

  • shouting

  • spears

  • questionable armor choices

  • democracy (sometimes)

This is not an even matchup.

But somehow, this rivalry shaped Western civilization.
