Pinhead Perry the bully clearly was both a gunboat “diplomat” goon and the catalyst for the radical transformation of Japanese society. As regards the rest of your questions, no one can say with certainty. Life is replete with variables that can lead one in wholly unexpected directions.

Great piece! Thanks. The environmental effects of Perry’s expedition were profound, changing the land in diverse, far away places like the one I live in. I wrote a bit about them, if you’re interested, in an article titled ”The Great Replacement” on my own Substack. The opening of Japan eventually led to a fashion craze in the US which (it’s a long story) transported many invasive species to the US. Love your essays.
