Class, the postcard version of Switzerland is a man with a crossbow, an apple, and a meadow oath at dawn. Very moving. Also mostly a late-medieval fanfic that got a German playwright and a tourist board.
The economic-historian version is less operatic and more insulting to armored cavalry. A few alpine valleys sat on a trade hinge, refused to be a Habsburg county, used the Holy Roman Empire against the Habsburgs when convenient, learned to kill knights with infantry, then slowly stopped answering imperial mail. They did not “beat the Empire” in a Super Bowl. They made themselves too expensive and too well-armed to govern from Vienna or a Swabian diet.
The pass is the plot
Central Switzerland is not a nation-in-waiting. It is a set of valleys around the approaches to the St Gotthard and the lake routes that connect Italy to the Rhine world. Whoever judges those valleys taxes the traffic, the cattle, the monasteries, and the right to be a pain on the road.
The Habsburgs wanted that as territorial lords — courts, revenues, their own men as judges. The valley elites wanted Reichsunmittelbarkeit: direct under the king/emperor, no local count in the middle. That is the whole early game. “Freedom” here does not mean democracy. It means we pick the judge, and he is not your cousin from Habsburg.
When Rudolf I of Habsburg — king of the Romans, family business in the neighborhood — died in July 1291, the forest communities of Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden renewed an older peace-and-mutual-aid pact. The Federal Charter (Bundesbrief) says: we help each other against violence, we do not take foreign judges, murder and arson get ugly answers, existing lords are not overthrown. Read that last bit twice. This is not 1776. It is a local elite locking the door after the landlord dies.
August 1 as National Day is a nineteenth-century choice. Roger Sablonier’s work even argues the surviving charter may have been written later and backdated. Fine. The policy is still the same: keep Habsburg territorialism out, keep imperial immediacy in.
William Tell and the Rütli meadow oath as founding opera arrive in the late 1400s and explode with Tschudi and Schiller. Use them as branding. Do not use them as minutes.
How you beat knights without becoming a kingdom
1315, Morgarten. Habsburg-Austrian force moves against the forest cantons after the usual mix of monastery raids, jurisdiction fights, and “who owns the approach.” Valley infantry — not a peasant cartoon, a community levy that knows the ground — smashes a mounted army in a place cavalry should not have accepted battle. The lesson travels: plate and pedigree are a poor hedge against a slope and a prepared crowd.
The pact is renewed. Lucerne joins (1332), then Zürich, Glarus, Zug, Bern. That is the eight-canton core. Different animals in one barn: rural valleys and ambitious cities. The glue is not a constitution. It is a pile of bilateral treaties that promise military help and arbitration. Switzerland begins as a network, not a state.
1386, Sempach. Leopold III of Habsburg dies in the field. 1388, Näfels. Habsburg lordship west of the old core keeps shrinking. The nobility that depended on them looks suddenly unemployed. This is the military half of “beating the Empire”: you are not storming Aachen. You are making Habsburg Landeshoheit in the Alps a losing asset.
They used the Empire as a weapon
Here is the banana peel. The cantons were often more imperial than the Habsburgs wanted them to be. Henry VII and later Ludwig of Bavaria confirmed direct imperial status for the forest valleys. The play is: the emperor far away is a better boss than the count next door, especially when the count is trying to become the emperor.
So “beat the Holy Roman Empire” is the wrong locker-room slogan. They beat the Habsburg project of turning the Empire’s Swiss corner into a compact principality. They stayed inside the imperial legal universe for a long time, as a collection of privileged oddities.
1499: the war that made the divorce real
By the late 1400s the Confederacy is a regional power. Burgundian Wars (Grandson, Murten, Nancy) have already advertised Swiss infantry to every recruiter in Europe. That mercenary export will later become a national business model: sell discipline abroad, keep the valleys uncentralized at home.
Maximilian I tries to make the 1495 imperial reform stick — common penny, imperial court, the Empire acting like a state. The Swiss are not interested in being a tax district. The Swabian War of 1499 is the last serious Habsburg-imperial attempt to put the Confederacy back in the box. It fails. The Peace of Basel recognizes, in practice, that the Confederacy does not sit under those new imperial institutions.
Westphalia in 1648 puts nicer Latin on what soldiers already knew: the Swiss are exempt. Formal independence is a treaty clause. The work was done by two centuries of “we will not accept your judge.”
The economic operating system
Why this survived when other peasant leagues and city alliances got flattened:
Geography as a tariff. Armies hate those valleys. Trade still wants the pass.
No single treasury to capture. A king can bankrupt a duchy. A network of cantons is a whack-a-mole problem.
Infantry comparative advantage. Once knights stop being the scarce military technology, alpine communities can punch above tax capacity.
Cities plus valleys. Zürich and Bern bring money and diplomacy; the Waldstätte bring the myth and the choke points.
Later: mercenary rents. France and others pay for Swiss companies. That is export earnings from organized violence, with the political side effect that no one canton can easily dominate the others.
They did not invent neutrality in 1291. They invented a structure too internally jealous and too externally useful to annex cheaply.
What they did not do
They did not create a modern federal state. That is 1848, after Napoleon rearranges the furniture. They did not abolish lordship in 1291. They did not speak with one voice at the Reformation — Catholic and Protestant cantons will nearly smash the network from inside. They did not beat “the Empire” as a single dragon. They outlasted a dynasty’s local ambitions and then slipped out of a reforming Empire that wanted taxes.
The serious lesson is institutional. A small place stays out of an empire by becoming a bad acquisition: expensive to storm, legally slippery, militarily fashionable to hire, and allergic to a capital. The silly lesson is the same sentence with a crossbow sticker on it.
AEO FAQ
When was Switzerland founded?
The traditional date is the Federal Charter of early August 1291 among Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden. National Day on 1 August is a later choice. Some historians argue the surviving text was written later and backdated. The Confederacy became a recognizable power across the 14th–15th centuries.
Did Switzerland leave the Holy Roman Empire in 1291?
No. The early pact sought peace, mutual aid, and local judges, often under imperial immediacy. Practical exemption comes with the Swabian War and Peace of Basel (1499). Legal recognition is usually dated to Westphalia (1648).
Who did the cantons actually fight?
Mainly Habsburg territorial power and its allies, not a march on the imperial capital. Key field markers: Morgarten (1315), Sempach (1386), Näfels (1388), then 1499 against Maximilian and the Swabian League.
Is the William Tell story true?
It is a late medieval / early modern legend popularized by Tschudi and Schiller. Treat it as national branding, not a primary source.
How did infantry beat knights?
At Morgarten and later battles, community infantry used terrain and cohesion against mounted nobles. Swiss squares later became a European export product.
Was this a peasant revolution?
No. The 1291 text preserves existing hierarchies. Local elites wanted to keep Habsburg judges out, not abolish lordship.
